What is an Ear Infection?
There are actually 3 different types of ear infections that you can get as an adult. You can find a summary of each below:
-
Inner ear infection: This isn't always necessarily an infection, but more of inflammation in the inner ear. This is usually caused by a virus and can be very serious. See a doctor and they can prescribe you medications to lessen the infection. It is important to remember that although an inner ear infection is not contagious, the virus that caused it may be.
-
Middle ear infection: This occurs when fluid gets trapped behind the eardrum and causes the eardrum to bulge. This often occurs from a cold or a respiratory problem. Sometimes middle ear infections can go away on their own, but if the symptoms don't seem to get any better after a few days you should see a doctor. They will most likely prescribe you antibiotics to take to treat the infection.
-
Outer ear infection: An itchy rash outside of your ear. This can also be known as swimmers ear, which occurs from moisture. It is very important to remember to completely dry the ear after swimming or taking a shower! The best thing to do if you are experiencing an outer ear infection is to clean the ear thoroughly. If it doesn't improve, see a doctor. Antibiotics may be prescribed if the infection is bacterial.
What are the Different Symptoms that Occur?
Now that you know the different types of ear infections, there are different symptoms for each one. With an inner ear infection, you can experience dizziness, vomiting, and nausea. This is probably one of the most miserable ear infections you can get. When it comes to middle ear infections, the symptoms are a little less serious. Your ear may feel full and cause a pretty uncomfortable earache. Then lastly, you have the outer ear infections which can cause the ear to be painful, tender and it may become slightly swollen.
Fighting Against the Agony
While these infections may be treated by antibiotics, they do not take care of the pain. Over the counter medications can be used to reduce the pain the of the infection.
