April Showers Bring May Flowers... And Wet Hearing Aids

Posted by on

Happy April everyone! It's the first week of the month and we hope you are crushing it. Taking on April means taking on the warmer weather and the rain, but be sure to be keeping your hearing aids dry! This article is designed to give you everything you need to know about hearing aids in wet environments.

What Happens To Hearing Aids In The Rain?

Very few hearing aids are waterproof and getting them wet can cause many problems including the performance of your hearing aid and a shortened battery life. This doesn't only mean rain, it can also include fog or anything that can produce a moist environment.

"Moisture and humidity are the two worst culprits for hearing aids," says Elizabeth Levine-Davis, a clinical audiologist at the New York Eye and Ear Hospital in an article on AARP.

The most obvious and successful way of keeping your hearing aids dry is just simply checking the weather forecast before going out and avoiding the rain if possible. If you must go out in the weather, be sure to keep your hearing aids protected with an umbrella or rain jacket.

If you like working out outside, it is good to do so in the coolest part of the day, either early in the morning or later in the evening. This helps prevent soaking your hearing aids in sweat. Taking the hearing aids out during exercise and storing them in a safe and dry place such as a container is recommended if able.

What To Do If Hearing Aids Do Get Wet

The tips above can be very helpful but at some point, your hearing aids are bound to get wet. When this happens, turn off your hearing aids and take out the battery. Dry them completely by wiping them gently with a towel.

Don't Let Your Hearing Aids Or The Weather Slow You Down!

When it comes down to it, we can't let the fear of our hearing aids getting a little-wet ruin our plans or get in the way of some heart-healthy activity. This article just serves as a reminder to take good care of your hearing aids in the rainy and moist weather to come. Have a safe and dry April!
