May is here which means flowers, warmer weather and the end of a school year! But did you know that May is also Better Hearing and Speech month?
Each May, Better Hearing & Speech Month (BHSM) provides an opportunity to raise awareness about communication disorders, according to the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.
Why is this Important?
Approximately 46 million Americans experience some form of communication disorder, according to the National Institute of Deafness and Other Communication Disorders. May is the month to become educated on the disorders so many people suffer from. Communication disorders can compromise physical and emotional health and affect the social, educational, vocational, and recreational aspects of life.
3 Ways to Support the Cause this May:
1. Become Educated: One of the best ways to celebrate this month is learning what it is all about. There are so many people out there that suffer. Make it your goal to learn what it's like and exactly what is happening.
2. Communicate with those that suffer: This goes along with number one. The best way to really understand is by talking to someone that experiences it day to day. It is also helpful to let them know you care and are aware of what they face. Walk with them during their journey and be sure they know they are not alone.
3. Help promote awareness: In reality, this is what this month is all about! When you think of a health condition, hearing isn't always first on the list. We need to be aware of how many people are affected by hearing loss and do our best to support them. Whether you are supporting the use of hearing aids or promoting the awareness of the disorders themselves, it is a wonderful way to celebrate this month.
Make this May Matter
May is always a very exciting time of the year with summer quickly approaching, but make it your goal this year to make May matter and support Better Hearing and Speech month. You never know the people around you that find this disorder every day. Don't make them do it alone!
