In recent blog posts, we have talked about the frequency of ear infections in both children and adults. These ear infections can be painful, uncomfortable and time-consuming, and while some of them may go away on their own, others need the attention of a medical professional. This article explains when it becomes necessary to see a doctor about an ear infection.
How To Know It's Time To See A Doctor
Ear infections aren't always a big deal, but there are times when they can be more serious. According to Everyday Health, if you are experiencing any of the below symptoms, it's recommended that you make an appointment with your doctor as soon as possible.
- A knot or swelling formed under or behind the ear
- Difficulty moving parts of your face in a normal way
- Personality changes — such as a child becoming extremely fussy or lethargic
- Sudden high fever
- Age- if a child is under 6 months of age, seeing a doctor is suggested
It is also important to remember that if the infection doesn't seem to be getting better after a couple of days on its own, a doctor visit is highly suggested.
What Can the Doctor Do?
When arriving at the doctor, they will ask some questions about how you have felt over the past several days and if you have taken anything at home to try and help the infection or pain. It is important to tell them everything and be honest. They will evaluate the infection and ultimately decide what is best. In most cases, they will prescribe antibiotics to the patient to fight the infection and recommend some OTC medication to help with the discomfort.
It is crucial to listen to everything the doctor says and follow any instructions given after the appointment. It is also important to take the prescription all the way through to prevent the infection from coming back.
