What is the International Week of the Deaf? 

According to the World Federation of the Deaf, International Week of the Deaf is a week in September where people who are deaf are recognized and celebrated. Those who are deaf celebrate the International Week of the Deaf to commemorate the first holding of the World Congress of the World Federation of the Deaf (WFD). Deaf communities worldwide celebrate their deafness in the last week of September every year.

How Did International Week of the Deaf Start?

International Week of the Deaf started in Rome, Italy in 1958. There, authorities held the first World Congress of the WFD. The week promotes the uniqueness that people who are deaf possess, and the capability they have as individuals.

Who Celebrates International Week of the Deaf?

Traditionally, those in the Deaf community celebrate the International Week of the Deaf. Supporters of the Deaf community are also welcomed to celebrate and support the Deaf community any way they can. Using or learning sign language is a great way to communicate with and support the Deaf community.
