Why Memorial Day Matters

Posted by on

Memorial Day is always exciting. For some of us, it means a day off work and the kick off to summer. But to others, the true meaning is celebrated; a day to celebrate those who died in active military service and remember their bravery. We get a day away from the work and the craziness to celebrate them, so why wouldn't you?

This article will tell you all about the meaning behind Memorial Day and why it is so important to be aware of why we honor this day.

Memorial Day vs. Veterans Day

I know some of you are wondering why we celebrate both memorial day and veterans day. To answer that question, they are completely different. Memorial Day is to honor those who died while serving our country while Veterans Day is to celebrate everyone who fought, those who are gone and are those who are still here.

In 1868, Commander in Chief John A. Logan of the Army of the Republic issued what was called General Order Number 11, making May 30 as a memorial day.

Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the US and was originally always celebrated on May 30th. It is now always honored on the last Monday of May and usually signifies the beginning of summer. Some like to honor those who are gone by visiting the cemetery or go to memorials while others show their support by simply flying their American flag high.

Ways To Celebrate Those Who Lost Their Lives

  • Send a note of thanks to Veterans you know. Let them know you are thankful they are still here today.
  • If you know someone who has lost a loved one in battle, offer to help with a household project or help meet a special need they have.
  • Fly the American flag.
  • Pause and think upon the meaning of Memorial Day.

Remember the Real Reason for Memorial Day

It's hard to not get excited about a day off work, a long weekend, and the beginning of summer, but Memorial Day is so much more than all of that. So while you're laying out by the pool or on a float in the lake, take a moment to honor the men and women who risked their lives to save ours. We owe each and every one of the people that lay their lives on the line the respect we would all want. Happy Memorial Day!
